BALTIMORE KICKERS SOCCER PROGRAM
Since its founding in 1953, soccer has been the heart of the Baltimore
Kickers. The mission statement of the club was to promote fellowship and the
German Culture through the playing of soccer. Today, the Kickers still offer an
adult male unlimited team and an adult male Over 40 team, but we are about to
embark on a sponsorship with a girls’ team that plays in the Soccer Without
Borders program. This is a very new and exciting development in the Kickers
Soccer Program.
Soccer Without Borders is a program which has been around since 2010
and have chapters in various cities throughout the United States where there are
large populations of legal immigrants to this country. They use soccer as a
means of assimilating the children of these immigrants into American Society.
The children attend American schools, learn to speak English, learn American
customs and are mentored by the coaches of the teams organized by the Soccer
Without Borders program. They are a 501C3 organization that relies on
donations to run their business. The team the Kickers will sponsor are made of
young women from African and Latin countries and most attend the school,
Vanguard Academy, which is right down the street from our clubhouse. The girls
will be of senior high school age.
We will still have our men’s unlimited team which will now play at Spring
Grove State Hospital grounds on Sunday nights at 8:30 PM and our Over 40
men’s team which plays on Tuesday nights in Anne Arundel County. One notion
I want to clarify to our members and others is that the youth team will be
supported by Kickers Club funds while the men’s teams are self-supported.
Since the COVID days of 2020, to relieve some financial burden on the Club, the
men’s program has been funded by the players and private donations.
If anyone is interested in watching our teams play, the schedules and other
soccer related information will continue to be posted on the website. If anyone
is interested in trying out or has a question on soccer, please contact the Club
Soccer Manager, Fran McGrath at mcgrath494@aol.com or at 410-530-2018.
BALTIMORE KICKERS
WEEKLY SOCCER REPORT FOR
JUNE 22nd TO 29th
1) Our unlimited team endured another tough loss this past Sunday losing to our
rival Das Bierhalle by a score of 2 to 1. The loss pretty much relegates the team
to the second division of the Maryland Super League in the fall. We had a bad
fifteen-minute period in the first half where we lost our composure and allowed
them to score two goals. Even though we played them even in the second half,
we could only muster a goal by Anthony Ramirez and missed a penalty kick that
would have tied the score. This seems to be the story of our life this spring. We
have one more game against Ambition FC this coming Sunday at 5 PM at Milford
Mill High School.
2) Our Female Soccer Without Borders team finished their schedule on June 15 th
and will not play again until the fall. They did not win a game but learned how to
play and I am sure they will be a much better team in their fall league.
3) Our Over 40 Squad won Tuesday night 3 to 1 over Viet Met and won last
Tuesday night June 17 th over the Bay Area Stricker’s by a score of 4 to 3. This
past Tuesday, Aaron Rubin scored two goals and Tony McLean scored one while
on the 17 th , Tony had two, Brian Guerin had one and Arnaud Dorfack had one.
The team has 6 wins, 1 loss and 3 ties and are in fourth place in their league with
one more league game to go next Tuesday July 1 st .
4) After promising soccer viewing parties for the past few months,
finally, I have a break in my work schedule where we can do two
between July 4 th and July 8 th . On July 2 nd , the UEFA European
Women’s championships begin. Germany is in a group with Poland,
Denmark and Sweden. Germany plays Poland on July 4 th at 3 PM,
Denmark on July 8 th at Noon and Sweden on July 12 th at 3 PM which is
right in the middle of the German Festival so watching that game is
out. However, I am willing to open the clubhouse on July 4 th and
Tuesday July 8 th to watch the German women play. Let me know if
anyone is interested. Same deal as in past viewing parties, free
snacks, water and soft drinks but you pay for any alcohol.
5) Don’t forget Oktoberfest on Sunday September 28 th . A lot more will be said after
the German Festival but remember we have a live band this year. The Polka
Terps will be performing!
